Odotettavissa ukkosta / Weather forecast

Toivottavasti tämä ei nyt enteile hurjaa ukkoskesää. En kangasta tilatessa huomannut, että siinä on salamoita. Viehätyin väreistä ja ennemminkin minulle tuli mieleen Peace&Love -meininki. Sinäkään et varmaan näe värikkäässä kankaassa salamoita ja sadetta, mutta kyllä ne siellä on.


I hope this does not predict the weather for the next summer. I dind't notice the lightning in the fabric when ordering it. I was drawn by its colors which gave me more of a Peace&Love vibe. I bet you can't see the lighning and rain in the pattern either.

   

Tyttö halusi tietysti tästä itselleen mekon. Yläosassa on käytetty Ottobren (3/14) Giant apple kaavaa ja alaosassa pidennettyä peplumia. My daughter wanted a dress (why did I even bother to ask?). I used Giant apple from Ottobre 3/14 for the top. The bottom is a lenghtened peplum.

Olen kokeillut tällaista foliopainantaa vasta muutaman kerran, enkä ole saanut foliota kiinnittymään tasaisesti. En saanut nytkään, mutta ei se haittaa. I've only tried this sort of screen foil thing a few times and I haven't been able to get the foil to stick all the way. I didn't this time either, but it's ok.

Enää muutama kuukausi kesään: ukkosiin ja auringon paisteeseen, jäätelöön ja ötököihin. Just a few more months and it will be summer with its thunder storms and sunny days, ice-cream and insects.



More is more

Postasin Mainion mekosta inspiksensä saaneen mekon aiemmin. Siitä tuli paras mekko ikinä,joten ompelin pari lisää.

I posted a Mainio inspired dress earlier. It turned out to be the best dress ever. Now it has company since I made two more dresses with the same pattern.

Tästä tuli aivan ihana. Sininen näyttää olevan Minean väri. This is absolutely fantastic. I love it. Blue turned out to be the color for Minea.

What a mainio dress!

Kopiokissan tunnustuksia:

Näin kaupassa ihanan mallisen Mainion mekon. Ajattelin tietysti heti, että tuollaisen voisin ommella itsekin - tosin samaa kangasta minulla ei ole. Reiluuden vuoksi ostin kuitenkin mekon ensin ja rupesin kopioimaan ideaa vasta sitten (ei ollut edes kallis mekko). Mekon etu- ja takakappale ovat erimalliset. Takaosa on nimittäin kahdesta kappaleesta ja vyötäröllä on rypytys, jota A-linjaisessa etukappaleessa ei ole. Lisäksi takaosa kaartuu hiukan pidemmäksi kuin etuosa.

Confessions of a copy cat:

 I found a cute and well fitting dress from Mainio in a store and my instant thought was how easily I could make one just like it. To be at least a bit fair I bought the dress and copied the idea at home instead of the store. It wasn't expensive but this way I have at least paid something for the idea. The idea of the dress is that the back is different from the front. The front is one piece while the back is made of two sections. The back is also slightly longer than the A-lined front. The fabric is of course different than in the original.

Sydänmekko / Sweetheart dress

Kaikkien aikojen suosikkimekko, vaikka olikin tuskaa saada yläosasta juuri sopivan kokoinen. Neljäs kerta toden sanoo, vai miten se nyt menikään. Käytin loppujen lopuksi mekossa tätä kaavaa, vaikka jouduinkin muokkaamaan sitä. Yritän nyt muistaa tehdä hiukankin erikoisemmat tekeleet ensin lakanakankaasta. Mekko on vaaleaa satiinia, vuori on mintun väristä kukkapuuvillaa. Alaosa on myös satiinia, mutta päällä on kahdenlaista tylliä: ylinnä vaaleansinistä ja keskellä glitteriä. Molemmat Eurokankaan palalaarista. Rypytin vain tuon ylimmän tyllin. Satiini ja glitteritylli on leikattu A-linjaiseksi.

Mekossa on yksi ainoa nappi. 

This has to be my all time favorite even though getting the top part to be just the right size was a pain in the neck. Fourth time's the charm or something. I ended up using this pattern with alterations. Note to myself: use an old sheet to make a trial version if the dress is something I've never tried to make and looks at all complicated. The dress is made of satin and has a green cotton lining inside. The bottom is also satin with two types of tulle on top: light blue and glitter underneath.

Maximum

Ihastuin Burdassa (5/15) olleeseen merihenkiseen maksimekkoon. Pystyin kuvittelemaan itseni veneeseemme se mekko päällä (viis siitä, että mekot ovat veneessä äärettömän epäkäytännöllisiä, varsinkin pelastusliivin haararemmin kanssa). Eurokankaan palalaarissa sattui olemaan sopivasti leveäraitaista viskoositrikoota kukkarolle sopivaan hintaan, joten liehuisin kohta kauniissa maksimekossa auringonlaskuun.

I fell in love with a nautical maxi dress in Burda (5/15).  I could just picture myself wearing in on our boat looking glorious. Dresses ae extremely unpractical especailly if you are wearing a proper life vest. That, for some reason, did not cross my mind.

Koska en ole ihan vielä pluskoon mitoissa, pienensin kaavaa hieman sieltä täältä. 

Alaosa jäi suosiolla laskostetuksi alkuperäisestä poiketen, sillä Burdan mallista poiketen minulla on röllykkä!  Jätin myös taskut (liian hankala ommella tämän kankaan kanssa) ja "alupaidan" pois. Jotain toppia alla täytyy kuitenkin pitää ellei halua esitellä rintaliivejään kaikille. Yläosan kohdistukset osuivat kuitenkin hienosti kohdalleen (nuolet osoittavat kivasti röllykkää) ja on yllättäen todella sopiva. Vain miltä näyttää?

Since I'm not plus size (yet), I had to make the pattern a bit smaller. 

The bottom part is gatherd (unlike in the original) because unlike the plus-size model in the magazine I have a bump and I want to hide it. I left out the pockets ( way too difficult this time) and the "undershirt". I do have to wear a top of some sort with this dress unless I want everyone to see my bra. The pattern matching looks nice (arrows pointing to my bump) and to my great amazement the top fits me perfectly. Or how does it look to you?

Kellohelmoja / Full skirts

Helmat heilumaan! Make it swirl girl!

Minean mekossa on täyskellohelma. Yläosa on Ottobren Peplum-kaavalla tehty ja alaosan olen piirtänyt itse. Kangas on Pilkku-luomujerseytä PaaPiiltä. 160 cm leveää kangasta kului tähän 4-vuotiaan mekkoon tasan metri. Helmaosan halkaisija on n. 90 cm.

Minea's dress has a full skirt. The top is made with Ottobre pattern (Peplum 1/15). The skirt part, being a full circle, was easy to draw (diagonal 90 cm). The fabric (organic jersey) is from PaaPii. It is extra wide (160 cm) so I needed just one meter for this dress for a 4-year-old.

Minun mekon yläosa on tehty Burdan kaavalla.  Alaosan olen piirtänyt itse 3/4-kelloksi. Sivusaumoissa on taskut. Pääsky-trikoo on mukavan painavaa ja laskeutuvaa.

My dress is actually only 3/4 circle. The top is made with this Burda pattern. I inserted pockets to the sides. I love the weight of this jersey. The fabric won't get tangled and swirls nicely.

lloinen onnetar / Little miss luck

Ainolan Metsän liftarit -kankaan lämmin keltainen vei sydämeni. Kaavana on Ottobren Owl Princess muokattuna. I fell in love with the warm yellow this jersey from Ainola has. The pattern that was used in this dress is Owl Princess from Ottobre. I made some changes though, as the original is a long sleeved tunic.

Ja sitten arvontaan... And next the winner for the muffins and tea bags...

Onnettarena toimi innokas 4-vuotias. My 4-year old got to draw the winner.

I heart dress

Kesä lähestyy ja hihat lyhenee. Minea halusi pitkähihaisen ja minä (ajatukset jo kesässä) lyhythihaisen. Kompromissina syntyi mekko 3/4 mittaisilla hihoilla. Ajattelin, että hihat voisi kesällä vielä lyhentää. Suloisen sydänkankaan hankin paikallisesta eli Verson Puodista. Kaavana on Ottobren 1/15 peplum pidennetyllä helmalla.

As summer approaches sleeves get shorter. However, it turned out that Minea still wanted long sleeves. So, this 3/4 length is a compromise. I might cut them shorter when it gets warmer. The lovely heart jersey is from our local fabric store Verson Puoti and the pattern is a peplum from Ottobre. I just increased the length to make it a dress.

Idea rannerenkaaseen löytyi Ihana-askartelulehdestä. Hama-helmiä sulatetaan muutama minuutti 175-asteisessa uunissa ja helmistä tulee pieniä kiekkoja. Kurkkaa toinen Hama-helmivinkkini täältä.

The idea for the bracelet came from Ihana-magazine. The bracelet is made from Hama beads. We just put some beads into the oven (175 °C) for a few minutes and the beads melted into little discs. Check out my other Hama bead idea from here.

Jäätelö ja kesä ne yhteen soppii... Tämä mekko laitetaan kesällä päälle ja mennään torille syömään jäätelöä. Maltan tuskin odottaa. Kaavana on Ottobren 3/14 Giant Apple. Todella helppo mekko tehdä, ja tykkään siitä, että tässä mallissa pienet olkapäät on suojassa auringolta.

Ice-cream and summer go together... Next summer Minea will put on this dress and we will go to the market place to have ice cream. I can hardly wait! The pattern is Giant Apple from Ottobre 3/14. It is really easy to make and I really like the fact that it covers little shoulders from the Sun.

Päätin järjestää Minean nimipäivän 11.4. kunniaksi pienen arvonnan. Arvon pienen "herkku"paketin, jossa on muutama muffini ja tee-pusseja. Muffinit on tehty tällä reseptillä ja teepussit Mekkotehtaan ohjeella. Arvottavat herkut saattavat olla hiukan erinäköisiä.

I decided to have a little giveaway for Minea's nameday (April 11). The winner will receive this package of "sweet" things: some muffins and tea bags. The muffins are made following this recipe, and the tea bags are made according to the instructions in Mekkotehdas. The muffins might look a bit different as I am still making these like crazy and I havent decided which ones to give away.

Lähetän muffinit luultavasti ilman täytteitä täyttöohjeen kera. The muffins will propably be sent without filling. However, there will be instructions on how to fill the muffins.

Kietaisumekko / Wrap around dress

Suuren Käsityölehden (5/08) kietaisumekon kaava on odottanut ikuisuuden toteutusta. Talvipuutarhassa-jersey sopii mekoksi todella hyvin, sillä se on mielestäni hiukan painavampaa kuin moni muu trikoo ja se laskeutuu sen takia kivasti. Tein pieniä muutoksia kaavaan mm. hihojen istuvuuden suhteen. En myöskään tehnyt kietaisunauhalle aukkoa toiseen kylkeen. Laitan etukappaleet ihan vain päällekäin ja kietaisen nauhalla ympäri. Alakappale pysyy hyvin paikoillaan ja jos tuntuu, että ei pysy, niin ainahan sen voi kiinnittää vaikkapa hakaneulalla. Toistaiseksi hakaneula on pysynyt käsilaukussa. Yhdet työpaikan pippalot tässä on jo tanssittu.

This wrap around dress has been on my to-do list for years. I finally got around making it from Talvipuutarhassa-jersey. The fabic is ideal for a dress because of its weight. It falls  and moves nicely. I have already danced in this at a party at work.

 

Frozen

Kenenpä pikkutytön (ja vähän isommankin) lemppari ei olisi juuri nyt Frozen! Piipahdin Eurokankaassa ja saavuin kotiin yltäpäältä hileessä. Palalaarissa oli ihania prinsessakankaita ja kahmin niitä pussillisen Elsa-mekkoa varten. Kotona toki huomasin, että ai niin Elsan mekkohan on sininen, eikä hopeinen tai valkoinen. No, kyllä tästä määrästä kimalletta jotain Frozen-tyylistä aikaan saadaan. Kaavana on Mekkotehtaan Katariina hiukan pidennettynä ja laahuksella. Ompelukoneeni kieltäytyi ompelemasta hopeakangasta ja niinpä jouduin kikkailemaan lähes koko mekon pelkällä saumurilla.

Who little (and a bit bigger) girl wouldn't love Frozen right now. I popped into Eurokangas and came home coverd in glitter. They had such a selection of fancy princess fabrics that I simply could not help myself. I got an inspiration to make an Elsa-dress. At home I soon discovered that Elsa's dress is actually light blue and not white or silver. So, this is more of a Frozen inspired dress instead of being a copy of an Elsa-dress. The pattern I ended up using for the dress is once again Katariina from Mekkotehdas. I simply made the dress longer and added a trail. My sewing machine refused to sew the silver fabric so I had to manage almost completely with just a serger.

Kuten ilmeestä voi päätellä, mekko on mieluisa, vaikkei  Elsan mekon kopio olekaan.

As you can see she loves it... and thinks I am the best mom ever.

Laahus on leveämpi kuin takakappale. The trail is wider than the back of the dress.

Laahus on melko pitkä, mutta ei ole leikissä haitannut. Jos haittaa, niin se on helppo leikata lyhyemmäksi. The trail is pretty long but hasn't been in the way while playing. It is easy to cut shorter if needed.

MOISK!  MWAH!

Vielä vähän extraa: testasin Ikean kangastussilla piirtämistä T-paitaan. Parin pesun jälkeen nähdään, miten tussi on pysynyt.  Little extra: I tested a black fabric marker from Ikea on a T-shirt. Let's see what happens after a few washes.

Silmänisku / Wink

Koepino pienentyi puoleen, joten sen kunniaksi annoin itselleni luvan hiukan ommella. Ottoren myymälästä jemmaamistani joustocollege-kankaista sain aikaan mekon ja leggarit.

Pile of exams has decreased by half. Perfect reason to give myself a permission to sew something, isn't it. The strech college fabrics from Ottobre turned into a dress and a pair of leggings.

Löydätkö silmäniskun? Tein sen kangastussilla. Can you find the wink? I drew it with a fabric marker.

Tai siis piirsin yhden silmän auki. Kaikilla muilla on silmät kiinni. Actually what I did was to draw one eye open. All the others have their eyes closed.

Oktonauttipeli / Octonauts boardgame

Tämä ei ole ompelus, eil menee sinne kepposkategoriaan. Koskapa Suomessa ei ole Oktonautteja saatavilla, täytyy kaikki niihin liittyvä joko ostaa ulkomailta tai tehdä itse. Olenkin tehnyt jo muutaman Oktonautti-paidan ja mekonkin, mutta nyt oli vuorossa pelin teko. Minea ideoi pelin itse. Hän halusi nopalla pelattavan lautapelin. Alustaksi löytyi kaapin takaa ruskea kartonki. Netistä löytyi paljon kuvia, joita yhdessä tytön kanssa valitsimme ja printtailimme. Leikkaaminen jäi minulle, sillä kuvat ovat aika pikkutarkkoja leikattavia. Liimailu onnistui Minealta kuitenkin hienosti. Peli toimii niin, että heitetään noppaa ja edetään sen silmäluvun mukaan. Oktohälytyskohdissa otetaan kortti, jonka ohjeiden mukaan toimitaan. Yhdessä kohtaa peliä on myrskyvaroitus (ärjyvät nelikymppiset), johon kaikki pelaajat pysähtyvät ja heittävät noppaa nähdäkseen, pitääkö myrskykierros kiertää kerran vaiko kahdesti. Samalla opetellaan käsitettä parillinen ja pariton. Oktonauttihahmot olen hankkinut Amerikasta ja niillä leikitään meillä paljon muutenkin.

This has nothing to do with dresses so I guess it will fall under trick cathegory. Since it is impossible to get any Octonaut related items here in Finland you either order them from abroad or make them yourself - as I have done with a few t-shirts and a dress. This time we needed a game. Minea wanted a boardgame to be played with a dice. We found a big piece of cardboard and started printing images from the Net. I did all the cutting but Minea was guite handy with the glue. The game is played like any other boardgame, on the octoalerts the player has to pick up a card and follow the instructions. At one point there is a storm warning (roaring forties) and all the players have to stop there to find out whether to go round the storm once or twice.

Pelialusta ja kortit täytyy vielä laminoida/kontaktoida. Tässä pikku oktonauttifani pelin kimpussa. Yhä yökkäreissä, sillä pelin tekoon meni koko aamupäivä.

The board and the cards need to be lamineted. Here's our Octonauts fan in action. Still in her pj's as it took us all morning to make the game.

Pientä tuotekehittelyä: tein uudet kortit. Pelialusta ja kortit on nyt päällystetty kontaktimuovilla. Peliä on jo pelattu monta kertaa ja hyvin toimii.

R&D: I made new cards for the game. Both the board and the cards are now coated with transparent contact paper. We have played the game a lot and are quite happy with it, especially Minea.
